As you know, B2's sex is a surprise - my restraint and resolve in this regard is nothing short of unbelievable as no one thought I would last and honestly, nor did I.

Valentines Day has never really been a big deal in our home ... we always exchange small gifts and Scott always buys me roses but that's about it. This year is different however in that I have committed myself to making every holiday a fun one for E (and subsequently us) in 2014 and beyond so with that in mind, Valentines Day is about to become a big deal in our house. Not so much on the present/gifting front but more in the decorations, crafting and themeing.

I have bought Scott a canvas print of one of our favourite photos of us sailing on Tokyo Bay during the trip we took right before we found I was pregnant with E. I can see it hanging on the big bare wall facing our bed so hopefully he agrees. In return, I have 'suggested' he gift me with the new Glasshouse Limited Edition, Hong Kong. He bought me the Kyoto version last V-Day so its really not much of a stretch but I will certainly appreciate and enjoy it.

Presents aside, thanks to pinterest I intend to master the following special Valentines Day meals/treats for E. Its a kindy day for him so we will start it with heart shaped pancakes and then I thought I could send along a small heart shaped cake to share with his class as well as some Valentines fruit pops:




Ethan and I also got crafty on Sunday afternoon as the weather was so dreary and I 'helped' him make some Valentines cards to give to his grandmothers, cousins and beloved aunty 'Kaaaarrrr-keeeee'. They were pretty simple, I just stocked up on some pre-made red cards and let E go crazy with glitter, stickers and the like. We used mostly just double sided tape to stick everything down - safe and effective. On reflection, E is probably a little young for an intensive craft effort like the session we did but he had fun and next time I will stretch it out over a few days.

As B2s arrival draws ever closer - I will be on maternity leave in approximately 10 weeks - I am starting to give a lot of thought to the enormous changes ahead for Ethan, how they will affect him and what Scott and I can do to prepare him and make the whole process as easy as possible on him.

Being very much a 'mumma's boy' (much to my delight), quite sensitive and not even yet two years old, I know there is going to be an emotional time ahead for all of us as we adjust to another little person joining our family but its important to me we start out as a bigger family from the best possible place and for me, research and preparation helps.

I've mentioned Dr Sears before when we were going through some sleep and weaning issues with E and our success with their suggestions so I was pleased to find they also had tips for introducing a new baby. Other mummas' who have shared tips have been my best source here though and this is what I have so far that I believe will work for us and are in Ethan's best interests:

• Have Ethan come to the hospital as soon as possible after the birth to meet the baby and have Scott ask if he wants to bring a special toy for his new sibling and or a drawing for me. Its also suggested to keep the visit fairly short and have a special activity planned for after like a park or similar.
• Try to have hands free when Ethan arrives so I can focus on greeting him before introducing him to the baby. and once introduced, allow him as much contact with the baby as possible. Show him the baby's body and let him touch the baby.
• Involve him at the hospital - prop a picture of Ethan by my hospital bed and make sure he sees it. Ask his opinion about what the baby might be saying when s/he cries or which blanket he thinks the baby wants to be wrapped in. Tell him stories of what she looked or sounded like when he was born and take photos of him with the baby.
• Consider giving Ethan a gift from the baby to help break the ice at that first meeting. However the warning is that doing this may stretch the limits of logic, even for a toddler and to keep in mind that your children will be more likely to develop a close relationship if you let them find their own ways of bonding.
• Don't assume Ethan will be unhappy or upset at having a new sibling. While it's normal for a child to feel uneasy about the addition of a new member to the family, don't assume that he will feel displaced by the new baby. Often, children are delighted and interested in the new baby and more confused about how their parent has changed.
• Take time to simply listen and support whatever feelings Ethan has and know that, with time, relationships will settle in.

The plan is to buy E a baby boy Cabbage Patch doll to give him so that he can have a 'baby' to look after  while I care for the new baby as we have found he mimics much of what we do and this will help to have him involved in the day to day nursing etc.

I've also given some thought to putting together some new things to have on hand both at the hospital and at home to entertain E or keep him occupied while I am tending to baby. This is what I've come up with:

1. Books are a big hit here so they will come in handy during nursing time where I can read to E while feeding baby. 
2. Activity books and crafting like the Crayola packs will be handy when he visits in hospital and also for us to sit and do while baby has some tummy/playmat/swing time or if I'm really lucky, a nap!
3. Yo Gabba Gabba dvd and similar to have when I need to get things done... you know, like dinner, eat, clean.
4. Buzz Lightyear action doll. E is obsessed with Toy Story and his Woody doll he got for Christmas so we thought this would be a fun big ticket item to pull out when the baby and I get home from hospital.
5. Sticker books are another easy one as E loves stickers and anything dinosaur or digger related.
6. A Boon snack box to pack each morning with healthy treats for E to save time on preparation etc throughout the day.

I will add a few other knick knacks I find  in the coming months from the dollar shops and maybe even wrap some of them up to make it all a little more exciting.

Having a 19 month old and two adults who work fulltime, routine and schedule are key to everyone's happiness. Even a few minutes off schedule can throw the start of our day into chaos and have S and I both heading to work stressed, bad tempered and exhausted before we even begin. I like to know other's routines as I'm constantly adjusting ours to maximise time spent with E and getting things done around the home so we all start our day well.

In only a few months we are going to have some very big changes to the current routine but for now, our Monday to Friday looks a little like this:

5:15-6:30am - E wakes up and if its before 6am we beg him to go back to sleep by putting him in our bed and snuggling him under the covers. Despite our tired eyes, its such a delightful way to start the day with E all cuddly, sleepy and very happy to see us. If its still before 6am and no sleep is coming, S being the best dad/husband ever, gets up with E, changes him and gives him a sippy of milk to drink while watching Waybaloos on ABCKids while I either get an extra half hour of sleep or jump up to shower, apply makeup and dress.

7am - S has usually prepped E's brekky so I fix mine quickly (this week its Sustain cereal and juice) and sit down with E to supervise him eating and to talk about his day/dreams etc. Es breakfast starts with a piece of fruit (pears, mango or kiwi this week) followed by toast/crumpet he picks at then a bowl of weet bix with mashed banana and full cream milk (with a half a losec tablet thrown in). S will use this time to have a coffee, eat a piece of toast and clean up the kitchen/do dishes apart from Thurs/Fri where we swap and I pack E's lunchbox for DC including cutting fruit/sandwich shapes while S does breakfast supervision.

7:30am - I clean E down from smeared weet bix and we head downstairs to play and dress him while S has a shower and gets ready for work. I put The Wiggles or a Playschool cd on and we dance while we put the washing out (if I was organised and set the timer the night before) and play in the playroom or in the yard then we choose an outfit for the day, change nappy and get dressed.

8:15am - depending on the day:

• S's mum arrives to take E and I head off to work
• S goes to work, I take E to my mums and then head to work
• E & S head to swimming and I go to work
• I take E to daycare before going to work and S goes straight to work x2
